Welcome to the wonderful world of Byte, the Wonderdog!TM Byte has been around in one form or another for over forty years. A truly multi-platform, international application, Byte episodes have run on many computer systems around the world.

A brief history of Byte, the Wonderdog!TM

Byte, the Wonderdog! first surfaced around 1972 on an IBM 360 model 50 mainframe in Bloomington, Minnesota, USA. This CICS macro-level program written in OS/360 MFT assembler language, was an instant hit. It demonstrated the powerful animation capabilities of the business computer systems of that time.

A few years later, Byte, the Wonderdog! episodes were ported to MVS CLIST language on an Amdahl V6 mainframe running IBM’s MVS operating system. The transition was a clean one, with no users being deprived of their Byte episodes.  The main reason for the migration was to remove the complexities of the CICS assembler language programming. By porting to TSO CLIST, Byte, the Wonderdog! developers were able to concentrate more on the application than the underlying mechanics of the programming environment‚ a true leap in productivity.

In the early 1980’s, Byte episodes were implemented on Magnuson M80 and IBM 3032 mainframes in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This time, the underlying operating system was VM/370. So the episodes were migrated to VM’s EXEC scripting language. Once again, Byte’s incredible flexibility was demonstrated. Not only had the programming language and operating system changed, but also the host country. Byte was now an international phenomenon.

In the late 80's, Byte, the Wonderdog! moved to the big city, New York City. Under the expert direction of two hotshot technical VP’s at a large Wall Street brokerage, Byte, the Wonderdog! flourished. Many episodes were authored to run on an IBM MVS/SP operating system. Once again TSO CLIST was the underlying language. There are rumors that many of these episodes are still in production to this day.

By the 90's, the IT world was changing, and Byte, the Wonderdog! had to change too.  Episodes surfaced on AS/400’s in Minneapolis, London and Singapore. Written in the powerful OS/400 CLP language, the graphics were marvelously true to the quality of the original episodes written so many years before.

During the late 90’s, Byte remained true to his multi-platform heritage. Episodes were implemented in .BAT language to run on PC’s using the DOS, OS/2, Windows 3.1, and Windows 95/98/NT operating systems. An episode or two were even ported to an RS/6000 AIX system.

That brings us to today. The 21st Century. In this world where the Internet is King, Byte, the Wonderdog! has made the transition. Now positioned as a major website accessible to anyone with a browser, everyone can enjoy episodes of Byte, the Wonderdog! displayed in the same high quality animation that made this application so famous. Even though episodes of Byte, the Wonderdog! have been written as JAVA applets and JAVA servlets utilizing the latest in XML technology, we realize that this is beyond the capabilities of many users’ Web browsers. So the episodes have been written in the lowest common denominator to insure that everyone can marvel at the wonders of Byte, the Wonderdog!

Enjoy.
